What We Do

Mission statement: Challenging today for an independent tomorrow

Our provision

The Legacy Rainbow House specialise in providing services for children with brain injuries, disabilities and life limiting conditions from its centre of excellence, The Legacy.
We are currently creating and implementing new innovative services meeting the needs of children, young people and their families, via rehabilitation, therapy, education and recreation built on a philosophy known as Conductive Education.
We also have a Nursery located in Eccleston for mainstream pre-school children.

Children are able to attend The Legacy on a full time or sessional basis, according to their needs and capabilities.

We are the only centre in the North of England to offer this range of services. We receive no direct funding from Government or the health service, however, we are supported almost entirely by corporate partnerships, sponsorship and community fundraising.

We work alongside and complement a child's local education authority schooling. We have close links with local education authorities and schools, thus ensuring that the children are integrated smoothly into their chosen school, once they are ready to make the transition.

We also work with Primary Care Trusts to ensure continuity of services and professional awareness for child welfare teams.

We were delighted that our first Ofsted report in April 2008 rated our provision as 'good'.

Our services

The Legacy Rainbow House is dedicated to improving the lives of children with disabilities. We also encourage non-disabled siblings and children to attend from the local community to promote integration.

Our current services are offered to children up to the age of 21 and their families, and currently include:

  • Outdoor classroom
  • Fruit garden
  • Sensory room and garden
  • Parent and child group

We are also funded for Holiday Activity Clubs and a Youth Club until Feb 2011.  The Youth Club is for children and young people aged 11-16yrs on a Thursday evening from 6.30pm-8.30pm.  Funded by Aiming High for Disabled Children.

Our ethos

Our ethos is based on a holistic approach to rehabilitation and education which uses Conductive Education at its core. We have a team of transdisciplinary staff whose role is to encourage the children to become more independent. Together the staff develop the children's awareness and understanding of the world around them and help them learn how to undertake tasks which will build their self esteem, help with integration, and enable them to become active members of the community.

Our services meet the individual needs of each child in every area of learning, giving them greater confidence and understanding of their bodies so that they can become more independent and ultimately lead a better quality of life.

The Legacy Rainbow House provides high quality care and education in a safe, loving environment where children can explore, learn and be positively challenged. We work in partnership with parents and other professionals to help children learn and develop their full potential. We prepare each child to be as confident and independent as possible so that they can be integrated into their community. Above all we offer a service that promotes equality and values diversity.

Our team

A Board of Directors oversee the everyday running of The Legacy Rainbow House.  The board consist of professionals and beneficiaries whom meet four times per year to discuss issues within the charity.

Trans-disciplinary team

Conductors

Conductors are part of our trans-disciplinary team. They are specialist educators who rehabilitate children and adults with motor disorders, enabling them to lead more active and independent lives.

As the name Conductive Education suggests, it is an educational approach that not only aims to improve motor skills and function but also to transform development as a whole, including emotional and intellectual aspects. Our Conductors and Conductor-teachers have a degree in Conductive Education and some have a recognised teaching qualification. They are trained either at the Peto Institute in Hungary or the National Institute of Conductive Education in the UK.

Facilitators

Our team of facilitators work alongside the Conductors as part of the trans- disciplinary team. They work with the children on a one-to-one basis by facilitating the children during the Conductive Education programmes.

The facilitators gain valuable experience within The Legacy setting about children with special needs and on the philosophies of Conductive Education.

The facilitating team have a range of qualifications such as Level 2, 3 and 4 in Early Years and some are also working towards teaching degrees.

Physiotherapist

Our physiotherapist treats people of all ages with a range of physical or neurological conditions. The conditions are treated with movement, exercise and manual therapy programmes.

The Physiotherapist assists the rehabilitation process by developing and restoring the function of the body, enabling the beneficiaries to improve physical functions and their mobility.

Our Physiotherapist has a degree in Physiotherapy and she is HPC and CSP registered.

Childcare staff

Our team consists of staff of all ages and all are qualified to NVQ Level 2, 3 or 4. All the staff have a very good understanding of the Conductive Education philosophy and some have worked alongside conductors for many years and have extensive experience with children with special needs.

The team also participate in further professional and personal development and training to extend their knowledge and expertise.

We also have CRB checked volunteers on hand when required to enhance the classroom setting.

Office staff

Our administration and fundraising team consist of our charity CEO, Development Manager, Finance Officer, I-Marketing Officer, Company Secretary, Project Officers and Receptionist.  All of which work together as a team to raise funds, create awareness and build the profile of The Legacy Rainbow House.

Training and Development of the team

The Legacy team takes part in professional and personal development to keep up to date with developments within their areas of expertise. Team members have gained qualifications in Psychology, Sensory Integration, Halliwell Technique, Facilitation, First Aid, Child Protection and many more.

It is also very important to our setting that the team have regular team building events to encourage communication and team spirit.

The Legacy also keeps itself up to date with best practice by attending conferences and information days about children, education, health and relevant conditions.

Recently we have attended training for the Lancashire Quality Award and we are also members of organisations which help us keep up to date with best practice, information and resources.
